The Conair Instant Heat Curling Iron

Today I used my Conair Instant Heat Curling Iron for the first time. Even though I have naturally curly hair which I rock most of the time,  sometimes I want a more glam and trendy look. I therefore decided to buy this curling iron to attempt a loosely curled hair style.

The reason I chose an iron over a wand is simply because I'm familiar with it. My mom had a curling iron that she got in the 70's and used it for decades. Her hair was the complete opposite of mine: pin-straight and ready to be styled. I, on the other hand, wake up looking somewhere between Doc Brown and mid-80's Cher. Needless to say, my crazy mane was a little out of her depths. Figuring it out has been an adventure on its own, especially since style and fashion have never really been my top priority.

This morning I decided to start with a clean slate so I straightened my hair. I used a straightening iron even though I think most people use a blowdryer (which I don't own, and definitely don't know how to use with success- trials have turned out bad...BAD bad). Then, a couple of hours later, I got to business.

The result? A flop! I guess that the morning's heatwave prevented my hair from holding a curl at all (#irony). I will try tomorrow morning, maybe it will be in a better mood. Here are some pictures of the attempt none the less! Maybe I will give you some updates on trial two... or three... if there is ever success.

Much love, and happy Saturday!

A Year of Firsts

Happy New Year, and welcome to my blog!

2016 is finally upon us, and I am eager for all it has in store.   As you have probably guessed from the title of this post (and of this blog), 2016 is going to be a year of firsts for me.   I'm graduating from law school this spring, which will leave me, for the first time, without any formal academic goals. It will (hopefully) be the first time I'm fully employed. It will also be the first year I spend without my mom. It might even be the first year I regularly keep a blog! Lets not get carried away.

It's going to be a challenging year, but I am ready for it. I am excited to use this forum as motivation to take risks, seek new experiences, and learn as much about life as I possibly can so that I can share it with you- my forced and/or imaginary audience.

So without further adue... My first First!

Today I have christened the beautiful new blue suitcase that my dad gave me for Christmas!! Traveling is a huge part of my life-- from trekking across Long Island to backpacking through Europe, I am constantly on the run and living out of a bag. While I'm looking forward to a little more stability in the coming year, this suitcase will make the journeys I do take immeasurably easier than they were with my old one. The short handles are cushioned, which will prevent blisters when I'm carrying it up stairs, the wheels roll smoothly in every direction, and the long handle slides up and down like butta. Seriously. Like a big stick of butta. These details may sound insignificant, but I really think they are the qualities that turn an everyday item into a luxury good. Needless to say, I am in love.

See how beautiful it is? This picture was taken on my trip back to Brooklyn this morning. Riding the LIRR is always an adventure- this time I ended up befriending a family who all sounded like they could be close relatives of Fran Drescher. It was awesome.

(An ode to my old suitcase, purchased in Lisbon, Portugal and dragged across creation and back. Its last trip was this October when I went to Sanibel with my family. That was also, coincidentally, the last trip I went on with my Mom. The long handle broke (really, somehow, it shattered) as I left my apartment building. I had to carry it through the city, on the subway and in the airport--- Not the biggest roadblock I've navigated while traveling by half, but definitely indication that this dog saw its day. It was a good run, Brown Suitcase. Thanks for everything!)
